nucleus
n 1: a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible
for growth and reproduction [synonym: {nucleus}, {cell
nucleus}, {karyon}]
2: the positively charged dense center of an atom
3: a small group of indispensable persons or things; "five
periodicals make up the core of their publishing program"
[synonym: {core}, {nucleus}, {core group}]
4: (astronomy) the center of the head of a comet; consists of
small solid particles of ice and frozen gas that vaporizes on
approaching the sun to form the coma and tail
5: any histologically identifiable mass of neural cell bodies in
the brain or spinal cord
6: the central structure of the lens that is surrounded by the
cortex [synonym: {lens nucleus}, {nucleus}]

Nucleus \Nu"cle*us\, n.; pl. E. {Nucleuses}, L. {Nuclei}. [L., a
kernel, dim. fr. nux, nucis, nut. Cf. {Newel} post.]
[1913 Webster]
1. A kernel; hence, a central mass or point about which
matter is gathered, or to which accretion is made; the
central or material portion; -- used both literally and
figuratively.
[1913 Webster]

It must contain within itself a nucleus of truth.
--I. Taylor.
[1913 Webster]

2. (Astron.) The body or the head of a comet.
[1913 Webster]

3. (Bot.)
(a) An incipient ovule of soft cellular tissue.
(b) A whole seed, as contained within the seed coats.
[1913 Webster]

4. (Biol.) A body, usually spheroidal, in a eukaryotic cell,
distinguished from the surrounding protoplasm by a
difference in refrangibility and in behavior towards
chemical reagents, which contains the chromosomal genetic
material, including the chromosomal DNA. It is more or
less protoplasmic, and consists of a clear fluid
(achromatin) through which extends a network of fibers
(chromatin) in which may be suspended a second rounded
body, the nucleolus (see {Nucleoplasm}). See {Cell
division}, under {Division}.
[1913 Webster PJC]

Note: The nucleus is sometimes termed the endoplast or
endoblast, and in the protozoa is supposed to be
concerned in the female part of the reproductive
process. See {Karyokinesis}.
[1913 Webster]

5. (Zool.)
(a) The tip, or earliest part, of a univalve or bivalve
shell.
(b) The central part around which additional growths are
added, as of an operculum.
(c) A visceral mass, containing the stomach and other
organs, in Tunicata and some mollusks.
[1913 Webster]

  • [FREE] Which structures are common to both plant and animal cells . . .
Plant and animal cells share structures such as the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, and mitochondrion Unique structures include the cell wall and chloroplasts, which are only found in plant cells
  • Which structure is unique to eukaryotic cells? - Brainly. com
The nucleus is the unique structure that distinguishes eukaryotic cells from prokaryotic cells Unlike DNA, cell membranes, and ribosomes, the nucleus houses and protects genetic material
  • Both E. coli and Salmonella are single-celled organisms. They do not . . .
Prokaryotic Characteristics: Both E coli and Salmonella do not possess a true nucleus; instead, their genetic material is organized in a single circular chromosome located in a region called the nucleoid Reproduction: These bacteria reproduce asexually through a process called binary fission, where a single cell divides into two identical cells
  • An unstable nucleus undergoes gamma decay. How does the nucleus change?
When an unstable nucleus undergoes gamma decay, it releases energy in the form of gamma radiation, leading to a more stable nucleus without changing its mass or atomic number This emission helps in alleviating the energy imbalance, promoting stability Therefore, gamma decay significantly contributes to the nuclear stability of an atom
  • Where are organelles like mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus found?
Conclusion Mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus are not found in the nucleus, the plasma membrane, or within chloroplasts; they reside in the cytoplasm, which serves as the jelly-like medium that contains various organelles, enabling biochemical processes necessary for cell survival
  • [FREE] A neutron in a nuclear reactor makes an elastic, head-on . . .
A neutron in a nuclear reactor makes an elastic, head-on collision with the nucleus of a carbon atom initially at rest (a) What fraction of the neutron's kinetic energy is transferred to the carbon nucleus? (The mass of the carbon nucleus is about 12 0 times the mass of the neutron )
  • Which of the following best describes prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Prokaryotes are organisms without a membrane-bound nucleus and do not have membrane-bound organelles, while eukaryotes have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles Therefore, the correct answer is option B: Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus, eukaryotes have a nucleus
  • If you want to visualize the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, which of the . . .
To visualize the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, you can use an electron microscope for high-resolution imaging or a bright-field microscope with appropriate staining techniques to make the DNA within nucleus visible The nucleus is a prominent organelle in eukaryotic cells that contains the genetic material
  • Which of the following will stay in the nucleus? Select all that apply.
The correct options are a) 5' cap, c) poly-A tail, and e) 3' UTR In the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, certain parts of the mRNA precursor remain after processing, while others are removed or modified before the mRNA is exported to the cytoplasm The parts that will stay in the nucleus include the intron and the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR), which is part of the initial transcript but is
  • The diagram shows a process that is occurring in the nucleus of a . . .
If the process in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell is interrupted, it would most likely prevent DNA from being decoded into an RNA molecule (option b) This process, called transcription, is a critical step in protein synthesis
