TMRC
/tmerk'/ The Tech Model Railroad Club at {MIT}, one of the
wellsprings of {hacker} culture. The 1959 "Dictionary of the
TMRC Language" compiled by Peter Samson included several terms
that became basics of the hackish vocabulary (see especially
{foo}, {mung}, and {frob}).

By 1962, TMRC's legendary layout was already a marvel of
complexity (and has grown in the thirty years since; all the
features described here are still present). The control
system alone featured about 1200 relays. There were {scram
switch}es located at numerous places around the room that
could be thwacked if something undesirable was about to occur,
such as a train going full-bore at an obstruction. Another
feature of the system was a digital clock on the dispatch
board, which was itself something of a wonder in those bygone
days before cheap LEDS and seven-segment displays. When
someone hit a scram switch the clock stopped and the display
was replaced with the word "FOO"; at TMRC the scram switches
are therefore called "foo switches".

Steven Levy, in his book "Hackers", gives a stimulating
account of those early years. TMRC's Power and Signals group
included most of the early {PDP-1} hackers and the people who
later bacame the core of the {MIT} {AI Lab} staff. This
dictionary accordingly includes a number of entries from the
TMRC dictionary (via the Hacker Jargon File).

TMRC: /tmerk´/, n. The Tech Model Railroad Club at MIT, one of the wellsprings of
hacker culture. The 1959 Dictionary of the TMRC
Language compiled by Peter Samson included several terms that
became basics of the hackish vocabulary (see
esp. foo, mung, and

and has grown in the years since. All the features described here were
still present when the old layout was decommissioned in 1998 just before
the demolition of MIT Building 20, and will almost certainly be retained
when the old layout is rebuilt (expected in 2003). The control system
alone featured about 1200 relays. There were scram
switches located at numerous places around the room that could
be thwacked if something undesirable was about to occur, such as a train
going full-bore at an obstruction. Another feature of the system was a

with the wordFOO’; at TMRC the scram switches are therefore

Bibliography in Appendix C), gives a
stimulating account of those early years. TMRC's Signals and Power
Committee included many of the early PDP-1 hackers and the people who later
became the core of the MIT AI Lab staff. Thirty years later that
connection is still very much alive, and this lexicon accordingly includes
a number of entries from a recent revision of the TMRC dictionary.TMRC has a web page at http://tmrc-www.mit.edu/. The TMRC
Dictionary is available there, at http://tmrc-www.mit.edu/dictionary.html.

  • Measure bandwidth between two computer in a LAN - Super User
Is there any way to measure precisely bandwidth between two computers in a LAN?
  • Method for testing bandwidth speed between two set points
I can speed test both locations of course, but that isn't necessarily representative of the actual throughput between the two points Given the different ISP's and service speeds, I imagine I'd get different results depending on which end I test from One connection has 3x the upload speed making it the better server end I believe
  • How to test router-to-PC connection speed? - Super User
Please add the OS and router model you have BTW, you can connect the laptop both wired and wireless (eventually with a virtual network device), and test the transfer data speed between the two connections (The bottleneck is the wireless connection)
  • How can I test LAN network speeds between my computer and my NAS?
Ideally always test with a wired connection to limit factors (wifi interference) Here is a few steps i would do in order to find the problem and test network speed: First, make sure that the links between your NAS and network is correctly beeing displayed as gigabit and that your cable are OK
  • How do I test my connection to a given site? - Super User
10 Although internet connection is fast enough (8 Mbps, wireless speedtest), I'm having trouble streaming radio from a certain site Here's the peculiar thing: the stream seems to run smoothly on other ISPs, so I'm suspecting that this might be a peering issue How can I test my connection speed with a certain site or server?
  • Test network ports faster with PowerShell - Super User
In Windows 8 1, the Test-NetConnection cmdlet is useful for checking the state of a network port on a remote system However, it can be unnecessarily slow sometimes I'd like to know if there's some
  • Internet speed tests show fast download speeds, but real-world . . .
Every internet speed test I try (sponsored and independent) show that each device on my home network has ~50 Mb s download speed My router also lets me perform a speed test directly from itself, and it shows ~200 Mb s download speed, which is what I am paying for
  • networking - Why do two computers on the same network have wildly . . .
Both PCs negotiate at 2 5Gbps mode as confirmed in the network adapter status screen Both PCs have IPv6 turned off The CPU load on the NUC during a speedtest never goes over 30% I just tested the connection between the two with iPerf and Im getting 2 5Gbps between the two, so the full link speed

How can I test the speed of a LAN? I hope there is something baked into Windows to do this, because I am unable to install any third-party products
  • Quickly check Wifi speed on Windows 11 - Super User
I know I can search for and open the old quot;Network and Sharing Center quot; (Or run ncpa cpl), click on the connection, and this dialog will show my speed: Is there a faster way, or a shortcut
